Here is the only thing any media member can responsibly say about Anthony Davis' brain: We don't know what's going on in there.
“Dammit, I’ll be damned if I wasn’t laughing,” Smith said of Davis' injury before theatrically squeaking, “CONCUSSION?!” twice. “I thought the NFL season was over,” Smith said. “I understand that concussions can happen in other sports — boxing, UFC. And I mean, if the collision is fierce enough, I guess it can happen in basketball, too,” he continued, dripping with disdain. “But damn! I ain’t see anything yesterday that made me say concussion.
When Smith’s co-hosts confirmed that report, Smith sputtered, “A wheelchair? A wheelchair, really? Really? That’s where we are?" Brian Windhorst gamely tried to chime in with “I’ve seen concussions with less” and was roundly ignored. “No one is saying a concussion isn’t serious,” Smith said. “We’re saying we found it hard to believe a concussion actually happened on that play that we were watching! Oh, my Lord!”Smith, Barkley, O'Neal — these men are professional clowns.
The actual reporting on Davis, though, has not been much better. The story that tickled so many funny bones came from TNT's Chris Haynes. See if you can spot the contradiction between the two parts of Haynes' report from Wednesday night. “When they took him in this room, they had to … hold him up,” Haynes said. “He was stumbling a little bit. You could tell his equilibrium was off. Then about five minutes later, they brought a wheelchair in the room. And from there, he was escorted to the room over, all the way across the hall to the locker room.”
