The Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has sentenced a couple to 10 and 15 years behind bars. ECRNewsWatch KZN
The society's former finance officer Ruvanya Ramiah and her partner, Ayush Rambally were sentenced yesterday. The NPAs Natasha Kara says Ramiah was CFO at the KZN Blind and Deaf Society between March 2012 and February 2019.
"Her duties included salary payments and general payments, and she had access to and control of the Society’s banking accounts.""She said she committed fraud by paying herself inflated salaries, twice and sometimes more times in the same month. She also created false payments to suppliers and fabricated evidence to support those payments. The money went into her bank account and that of her husband.
In handing down the sentence, the court found that the couple did not show remorse and pleaded guilty due to the overwhelming evidence against them. The court concluded that their motive was greed and not need, as they were receiving an income.
