County prosecutor’s monitor installed in N.J. city’s police department

The move follows an uptick in internal affairs complaints since March 2023, officials said.

The monitor, made effective last week, was selected from the prosecutor’s office’s investigative ranks and will be “present at random intervals” in the department for the foreseeable future, officials said.

“To be clear, our goal is to help the Asbury Park Police Department in any way we can, but also to ensure that it functions in a professional and efficient manner,” he said. “However, neither the mere presence of these complaints or the action of installing a monitor presupposes that we find such allegations to be truthful or credible,” Santiago said. “We have been, are now, and will remain steadfastly committed to investigating each and every allegation with due diligence.”
