Heated debate at Lisburn headquarters over how debate on issue handled
A proposal to light up a council building in solidarity with Israel has descended in to a heated argument over the right to speak in chambers.
“This is not about taking a position on the Israeli Palestinian political situation, but rather showing solidarity with Israel and against a terror attack targeted at civilians men, women and children that injured and murdered many people and appears to have included terrible atrocities and indeed kidnapping.
The chairperson alluded to a new proposal having already been agreed outside chambers by the DUP Mayor Andrew Gowan, corporate chairperson Alderman Owen Gawith and vice-chairperson under the ‘exceptional circumstances’ clause of the council’s illuminations policy. Some concerns were raised by Sinn Fein Cllr Ryan Carlin that any illuminations should not be the “recognition of the killing of only one side of people” but also reflect on the people and “children killed in Gaza”.
Reaffirming to the chamber, chairperson Gawith added: “The intention of this illumination is not to convey solidarity with Israel, but a show of sympathy for all those killed in the attack on Saturday October 7 and the fall out of killings since.”
