Both local council leaders say the potential loss of revenue will adversely affect already under-pressure services
Lanarkshire residents are to see their council tax frozen next year following a surprise announcement by the First Minister – but local government body Cosla says “no agreement is in place” and that there is “real anger” from councils about their lack of involvement.
The First Minister said: “ will bring much-needed financial relief to households struggling in the face of rising prices, and some 2.5 million households will benefit. “Previous council tax freezes have been regressive, having no impact for the poorest in society and eroding the council tax base, compounding councils’ ongoing underfunding. We will explore the implications but are clear that local taxation should be left for democratically elected councils to determine.”
The authority was recently forced to abandon the £4.7m cost-cutting closure of 39 swimming pools, libraries, leisure facilities and community halls following enormous public and political outcry.
