Figures show Nottingham's child vaccine rates are below the national average
The city council will spend £240,000 over the next two years to boost vaccination rates in children as figures show Nottingham's immunisation levels are lower than the national average. The authority says there has been a slight decrease in vaccination rates over the last decade which could pose a "serious threat to children and the wider community."
Giving people vaccines "in places they trust" are among the initiatives that Nottingham City Council will now be rolling out, targeted at the four areas with the lowest uptake rates. The council says: "Data indicates that uptake of some vaccinations has decreased over the last ten years, with Covid-19 having a further impact on uptake.
"It is important to note that even a slight decrease in vaccination uptake is concerning. Sustained improvement in vaccination rates will not be achieved in the short-term. This model is based on engaging with the city's most marginalised communities to build trust and co-design solutions that work for the population.
The council says £220,000 of the money will be spent on 'outreach and catch-up vaccination services and £7,000 will part-fund a pilot of flu vaccinations in nurseries within three Nottingham wards. The final £13,000 will be spent on developing regular 'vaccination communications campaigns'.
