Over the past several months as discussions have been had at local, regional and national levels about the rise in sUAS platform use, it has become evident that there is a lack of understanding about these platforms and how their use may adversely impact public and private sectors.
Those grappling with the presence of drones as a nuisance or threat are looking to leaders in policymaking to create guidelines and rules that protect safety, security and privacy for all. Leaders can make progress by developing a clear understanding of what is at stake and how privacy, security and safety converge in the physical and cyber domains.
While drone use by hobbyists and criminal operators in the U.S. is in its infancy, if the world stage is an indicator, we can expect to see a sharp rise in the use of drones for purposes outside their intended use. Most publicly available sUAS have significant capability for surveillance based on readily available payload options including cyberattack and high-end advanced-capability cameras. Cameras with first-person view capacity pose a significant threat to privacy, security and safety.
The privacy, security and safety challenges associated with evolving drone capabilities are like the problems that arose with the evolution of the cyber landscape more than 10 years ago. The cybersecurity experts were forced to act rapidly and develop safeguards. We are experiencing another technological leap that has global implications.
