The Vancouver plan has the aspirational goal of increasing density through an equitable, sustainable land\u002Duse plan.
The strategy envisions encouraging high-density towers at key transit hubs and town centres and the gentler density of multiplexes and apartments in lower-density neighbourhood side streets, with the goal of creating complete, more equitable and sustainable communities over the next 30 years.
Council approved the plan at its last standing committee meeting of its term, so implementation will be up to the next council, and will likely become a central issue in the Oct. 15 election. And she echoed the comments of former planners who spoke during the July 5 public comment period that the plan appears to cast aside decades of work that went into a lot of local neighbourhood plans instead of weaving them together.Article content
“I really disagree that just the simple omission of a map somehow disregards the neighbourhoods,” O’Donnell said. Councillors also added final amendments to improve sustainability and affordability aspects in the plan, which mostly ask for staff to research and report back on initiatives. Couns. Hardwick, Rebecca Bligh, Melissa De Genova and Sarah Kirby-Yung did not support the measure over fears it would be a disincentive for homeowners to continue renting out those units.Article content
