After steadily but narrowly trailing, San Diego’s Measure B now holds a slim lead of 2,890 “yes” votes after the county released new results Wednesday from provisional and late-arriving ballots.
Measure B would end no-fee trash pickup for single-family homes if it is approved by a simple majority of voters. An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that the “no” vote on Measure B was leading. According to the latest results, Measure B has received 200,615 “yes” votes and 197,725 “no” votes. That translates to 50.36 percent in support and 49.64 percent opposed. The estimated number of countywide ballots left to be counted shrank Wednesday from 80,000 to 15,000. It is unknown how many of those ballots are from within the city and could be cast for or against Measure B.Prior to Wednesday, Measure B had steadily trailed since Election Day just over a week ago.
San Diego’s two-tiered trash system forces businesses and owners of apartments and condos to pay private haulers to pick up their trash, while single-family homeowners pay nothing beyond their property taxes. The measure would allow the city to start charging single-family homeowners a monthly fee for trash pickup. City officials estimate the fee would be somewhere between $23 and $29.
