Some good news for users of WhatsApp this morning - as it looks as if reports from this morning suggesting you would need to pay for it going forward could have been wide of the mark.
WhatsApp responded to the FT by saying:"We can't account for every conversation someone had in our company but we are not testing this, working on it, and it's not our plan at all." It found around a third of the member-only promotions were at their so-called"regular" price for less than 50% of a six-month period.
Among the deals of concern to Which? was a jar of Nescafe Gold Blend Instant Coffee advertised at Sainsbury's for £6 with a Nectar card - a saving of £2.10 on the"regular" price of £8.10. Which? said it had shared its findings with the Competition and Markets Authority and asked them to look at whether supermarkets could be hiking their"regular" prices to make loyalty scheme customers feel they are getting a discount.
The closest offer was being provided to Clubcard customers at Tesco or Asda shoppers, with the supermarkets charging £1.85 for the same sized tube. If you are regular reader of this blog, you will have seen us talk about the measures shops are taking to tackle shoplifting.
