The party should stop organizing official debates
Now in 2022, frontrunner Pierre Poilievre and the third-place finisher from 2020 Leslyn Lewis have both said no to going to a third official debate after attending the first two. That cancellation is a bargain no more though, costing their campaigns $50,000 each.
The 2020 LEOC learned a lot from the previous race, and adjusted accordingly. Five debates? Scale those back to two. $10,000 fine if you don’t attend? Make it $50,000. And peace seemed to come across the Conservative leadership land. Everyone attended. No one really complained. Having just four candidates and a short race helped immensely.You can’t really blame the 2022 LEOC for thinking that’s a recipe that should work this time around.
How do you question a candidate’s policy without risking sounding biased to the ears of their supporters? How do you entertain a membership when you have to give perfectly equal time to the last place candidate with the charisma of a paper bag and the same hope of winning as one?Article content
