Corporate deal-making dips in first quarter on trade, economic fears GlobeInvestor
. Deal-making in Europe plunged to its lowest level in nearly seven years. Deal values in Asia plunged as China faced a damaging trade war with the U.S. and an economic slowdown.
The cloudy picture left companies hesitant to move ahead with new mergers and acquisitions, a hesitancy that carried over to the first quarter in most countries. Interest rates in the U.S. remained relatively low and the nation’s economy experienced stronger growth than the rest of the world. Companies might now have a better sense of the global economy’s direction after pausing during the first quarter, she said. Many of those companies, still sitting on lots of cash, are looking for other ways to boost earnings over time.
