In Philadelphia, New Orleans and Los Angeles, former safety-net hospitals sit empty. But reopening a closed hospital, even when demand for health resources spikes, is not easy or cheap.
Elsewhere, city governments have struck deals with the owners of empty hospital buildings to lease their space during the pandemic. Atthe city is paying $236 per night per bed, for a total of $2.6 million each month.
"I think he is looking at how to turn an asset that is earning no revenue into an asset that earns some revenue, and isn't thinking through what the impacts are on public health," Abernathy says of Freedman."I think he's looking at this as a business transaction rather than providing an imminent and important aid to the city and our residents."
