The national Labour leadership may be relaxed, but activists in Islington North are gearing themselves up for a contest that will be nasty
at music festivals and sports events across the country as the then Labour leader became an unlikely hero among the young. Now, it’s a phrase that those at the top of theThe deep antipathy between the current Labour leadership and those who directly preceded them has only deepened over time. And it is about to take on a whole new dimension. This week, Labour published a shortlist of thoseRumours swirled about who would be in the running to be Labour’s choice.
Many potential candidates were understood to have been put off by this prospect, despite a safe seat in London normally being seen as gold dust by aspiring MPs.Some Labour officials had initially considered trying to find a Jewish candidate who could run against Corbyn to emphasise how much the party had changed. What better way to highlight this transformation, the theory went, than to have a Jewish person ousting the man whose time in charge was dominated by an? The idea didn’t last long.
Despite the profile of these two political veterans, it was two others that were short-listed. The first is Sem Moema, who has caught the eye in her current role representing Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest in the London Assembly. She will face a challenge from Praful Nargund, an Islington councillor and founder of a successful fertility business.
Some Labour sources voiced concerns about this, given it will allow many members still loyal to Corbyn to help choose who his main rival will be, before likely quitting the party to campaign for their man.
