COP27: The irony - developing nations want reparations for climate crisis effects but are pursuing fossil fuels
People protest during the COP27 climate summit being held in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. Greenpeace has been a vocal critic of African leaders who are pushing to exploit more fossil fuelThe Africa group isn’t serious about dealing with climate change, according to Greenpeace Africa, which added that African leaders were using the “the African COP” to undermine the goals of the Paris Agreement by pushing for more fossil fuel deals at the expense of people and the continent.
African nations, together with other developing nations, currently and in the lead up to the conference, have insisted on continuing to use fossil fuel to develop their economies, despite the evident impact of climate change.Greenpeace Africa head of communication Mbong Akiy Fokwa Tsafack said there was no sense of urgency from African leaders to deal with the effects of climate change, regardless of reports that Africa was warming twice as fast as other continents.
