Canadian company says regulators are ignoring science and recent court decisions

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSThe Department of Natural Resources for the state announced Monday, Nov. 14, it would not be renewing the two leases the Canadian-owned company holds in Rich Passage, near Bainbridge Island, and off Hope Island in Skagit Bay.

In a statement to SaltWire, an official with Cooke said, “This is a tragic outcome for fish that should have been healthy, sustainable, food for our communities.” the five-year permit granted to Cooke by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife to allow farming of steelhead trout in Puget Sound.on its website, said this week’s decision by the DNR and state public lands commissioner Hilary Franz also disregards a 2022 report https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mPef6Qw6hSIykZB3T5JrdfqHWSAfEPl3/view on finfish aquaculture in Puget Sound by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service.

The company suggested the DNR decision will also kill work that might have helped salmon stocks recover in Puget Sound. “The compliance issues relied upon by DNR as the reason not to renew our two steelhead fish farming leases in Rich Passage and Hope Island stem from our assuming ownership of farms that fell into disrepair by the previous owner,” Richardson explained.

The letters, according to other media reports, say Cooke operations could pose risks to the natural environment, saying fish waste can degrade the environment on the ocean floor and feeding fish in concentrated areas can contribute to algae production.“Despite years of litigation — and a company that has fought us every step of the way — we are now able to deny lease renewals for the remaining net pen sites,” Commissioner Franz said in a statement to the Seattle Times.
