Sentencing procedures for the 86-year-old former teacher were expected to begin in the Wynberg Regional Court on Wednesday. Fullard told the court he had not had sufficient time to prepare after Wares' previous lawyer withdrew from the case two months ago.
Iain Wares was convicted of indecently assaulting a former pupil at Rondebosch Boys’ Primary School while teaching there in 1988. He has remained out on bail for the past three years during the trial. Women and Men Against Child Abuse says it is unacceptable that a convicted paedophile is still free and living among children. The organisation’s Claudine Shiels believes the latest postponement is another delaying tactic to keep Wares out of jail for as long as possible.
"This is happening right as the doors of jail are possibly opening, and that we have in our sights justice for the children who were abused by this man and who have spent decades suffering because of what he did to them," Shiels said. Shiels added that the organisation is disappointed by yet another delay but remains committed to fighting until Wares is behind bars.
