Former trustee Vatsa Ramanathan faces political newcomer Veronica Yost in the race for the Place 2 seat on the Allen ISD school board. Yost, a longtime Allen resident, advocates for all students and prioritizes funding as the top issue for Allen ISD. Ramanathan resigned from the school board after voting against the closure of two elementary schools.

The contest for the Place 2 seat on the Allen ISD school board pits former trustee Vatsa Ramanathan against political newcomer Veronica Yost .A longtime Allen resident, Yost has volunteered in a variety of capacities, from the Allen ISD District Improvement Plan Committee to the Collin Central Appraisal District board of directors. At a recent candidate forum hosted by Allen civic groups, she said she has a son with special needs who graduated from Allen ISD in 2019.

Still, we think voters are better off choosing her than Ramanathan, who abruptly resigned from the school board in 2022 right after the board voted to close two elementary schools to save money. Ramanathan was the sole vote against the measure.Ramanathan told us he resigned because it was becoming “uncomfortable” for him there. He pointed to two specific incidents.

He described the second episode as an offensive comment made by a board member in closed session during a debate about mask mandates. He said the trustee referred pejoratively to the “Indian community.” He declined to identify that trustee but said the person is still on the board. In defending his decision to run again, he said, “If I’m not there to speak up, no one will be there to speak up.” But he couldn’t explain why that didn’t play into his thinking when he quit..
