She recommends that patients request an itemized bill to check that the services seem consistent with the care they received. "Speak to the billing department if something seems off," she says. "If you're insured, request your health plan's assistance."2.
"If that's not an option, at least ask for a discount on the charges — the Medicare rate, for example, is a good place to start," Zamosky says."Many hospitals and other health-care providers will allow for that," Zamosky says. "And, again, that's much preferred to incurring credit card interest."Depending on your situation, you may qualify for financial assistance.
