Conservative MP Andrew Scheer said his party will back changing the start date for when those with mental illness could seek professional help to end their lives.

OTTAWA—A potential political roadblock to the Liberals’ efforts to push back the expansion of Canada’s medical assistance in dying regime seems set to fall as the issue returns to the national agenda next week.

“Therefore, we very much support passing this bill to establish more of a timeline for the government to get this right, for parliamentarians to come together and get this part of the regime right.” In 2020 and 2021, they used up nearly every available minute of debate on the bill that expanded MAID to those whose deaths weren’t reasonably foreseeable, taking the legislative process perilously close to the deadline in place then for the implementation of a new law.The need for a law then was forced by a Quebec Superior Court ruling in 2019 which said the original MAID legislation was too restrictive.
