Corey Conners makes six birdies on an exceptionally tough Oak Hill Country Club East course to sit near the top of the leaderboard after Thursday’s opening round of the PGA Championship. Bob Weeks has more from Oak Hill.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Corey Conners admitted that in his practice rounds, he never saw the possibility of making six birdies on the exceptionally tough Oak Hill Country Club East course. But that was his tally after the first round of the PGA Championship, which pushed him up towards the top of the leaderboard.

“I think the highlight of the day was 5-iron into No. 6,” said Conners. “I was trying to be aggressive there and execute a really good shot, and I decided to tap in for birdie. That kind of got the round jump-started. I felt like it was a pretty good moment of the round.” “I felt really good about it today,” said Conners of his iron play. “I felt like I had rhythm, I was swinging with freedom and I hit a lot of really solid shots. It was certainly important today and hopefully I can keep that rhythm going the next few days.”

Not far behind Conners was Adam Svensson, playing in just his second major championship after teeing it up at the Masters last month. He posted an even-par round that included four birdies, two bogeys and a double. Svensson’s score left him tied with Taylor Pendrith, who made two brilliant par saves on the 17th and 18th holes to keep from falling over par. He drained a seven-foot putt for par on 17 and then did the same from 18 feet on the final hole.
