In a new interview with Star Trek Explorer magazine , Jonathan Frakes was asked about directing Strange New Worlds' crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks. Before discussing the crossover, Frakes recalled the positive reception Strange New Worlds received when it premiered in 2022, which came with tacit insults about Discovery and Picard. What a treat, that show. I was there when they premiered, and all of a sudden, everybody loved it, the fans and the critics... Unfortunately, part of what happened during that time was that the fans and the critics took the same opportunity to say, “This is the Star Trek we’ve been waiting for.” Either written or unwritten was, “Not Discovery and not Picard,” if you recall.
It's definitely unfortunate that some Star Trek fans and critics are unable to express their enthusiasm toward a particular version of Star Trek they prefer or enjoy without insulting the other series, or even diminishing them as 'not Star Trek.' Ironically, Star Trek: Picard season 3 also received praise as "the Star Trek we've been waiting for" because it reunited the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, thereby insulting Picard seasons 1 and 2.
