Congolese police talk to demonstrators calling on authorities to enforce an agreed withdrawal of M23 rebels from occupied territory in the region, within Goma in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo January 18, 2023.
“The main push factor is the intensifying violence and insecurity,” Tabaro said, adding that pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and young children were among the refugees. The UN has long accused Uganda’s neighbour Rwanda of backing the M23, which has repeatedly seized large parts of mineral-rich eastern Congo, allegations Rwanda denied.
