"We're not out there to ruin someone's bike ride. We're trying to grow good, local food for people" — Delta farmer Brent Kelly
Brent Kelly said he was driving a crop sprayer from his farm to a potato field that is only accessible by dike Sunday when an approaching cyclist refused to let him pass.
Farmers driving tractors and other farm equipment have primary right-of-way on the dike, with at least 10 signs reminding dike-users at various junctions along the route, including access points. “They couldn’t do what they needed to do until I got there,” he said. “So we were all waiting for this man.”
Delta South MLA Ian Paton said his family pastured cattle on the original grass dike before the federal government expropriated land to raise and widen it in the 1970s, creating a gravel roadway for farm vehicles. It remains an important way for farmers to move between their fields, keeping them off busy roads, like Highway 10.Article content
A Metro Vancouver sign along the Boundary Bay dike reminds users including cyclists that farm vehicles have right of way.Travelling the dike, you’re surrounded by fields growing a rich variety of crops, including vegetables and cranberries, he said: “I think there is a lack of awareness of how difficult it is for farmers to do what they do.”
