The Johannesburg leg of the international CrowdStrike Adversary World Tour was held on 15 September 2022.

Cyber criminals have dramatically shortened breakout times thanks to their increased use of compromised credentials to get into networks and start moving laterally.

Yassin Watlal, system engineering director at CrowdStrike META, said: “Speed of the essence in detecting and remediating attacks. Compromised credentials are a leading vector in up to 80% of data breaches now, which means attackers can access and move through networks far faster." Watlal outlined how access brokers were proliferating, providing compromised legitimate credentials to attackers, who use them to access networks and then move laterally using legitimate business toolsan approach known as “living off the land” . Using native, legitimate tools means no code needs to be installed on the target’s system, making it harder to detect, he said.

“There are four key steps to be prepared,” Watlal said: “Know your enemy, secure the enterprise, get next generation protection, and be ready when every second counts.
