The dynamic Lukhanyo Am has thrown his hat into the ring to lead the Springboks in the World Cup, should captain Siya Kolisi be sidelined.

A 2019 World Cup winner, Am has showcased exceptional skill and impact for the Boks and his leadership of the Sharks further bolsters his credentials.

With his ability as a player and astute on-field decision-maker, the 30-Test centre provides a compelling choice to step up and steer SA to glory if needed.“I am only focused on the upcoming international season and my individual performances. I want to be as ready as I can be,” the 30-year-old said. “Currently I am focused on getting strong and regaining my form after my knee injury.

“However, the opportunity to captain the Boks will be great. Whoever is the captain, there is a lot of experience around him. “My leadership style is about sharing responsibilities. I think I am very calm on the field and that can work to the team’s advantage at certain times in a game.” Am was one of 15 players who last week attended the first of two Bok preparation camps in Durban in May, as the world champions launch into the 2023 international season.
