The girl’s father, sitting next to his lawyer in the third floor of the Christina Street North courthouse, broke down crying as the judge read that part. He’d heard these facts read out loud before in a public forum, but 15 months had passed since he initially pleaded guilty to a charge of endangering a child younger than 10 by abandoning them.

She did, however, agree to cut the Crown’s suggested sentence in half due to the father’s diligent work at dealing with his addiction issues, including a six-month stay at a rehab program in Guelph. The man was first introduced to painkillers to help deal with a sports-related injury, but his addiction to opioids grew over the years, finally culminating in the use of fentanyl – a drug 100 times more powerful than morphine that continues to beLeszczynski said the father was well aware he had a decade-plus problem when he took his daughter to the hotel on his own without another caregiver. He had suffered an overdose just three months earlier, the judge noted.
