Up until July, Stewart was getting $686 on social assistance. Then he was evicted from his Windmill Road apartment in Dartmouth after it was condemned. That meant he lost the government shelter allowance and his cheque was almost cut in half. Vince Calderhead, a human rights lawyer in Halifax, called the province’s attempt to go back on its public commitment to pay all social assistance recipients “really shocking.” - Ryan Taplin / File

The Chronicle Herald asked how the department is reaching everyone, but its response was unclear. Stewart had yet to get details from his caseworker. Premier Tim Houston pledged last week that all current income assistance recipients would receive $150 as part of a provincial Fiona aid program. - Ryan Taplin
