The horses used in downtown San Antonio are heavily regulated by city ordinance and...

A recent request from City Council members Jalen McKee-Rodriguez and Phyllis Viagran proposes to ban horse-drawn carriages in San Antonio by end of 2023, arguing the horses are treated in a cruel and inhumane manner. It’s not true.

What people don’t realize is that we work with chiropractors, dentists, specialist farriers and vets in the care for these animals. They are microchipped, inspected and health certified every six months by our own vets, documented with annual health certificates and Coggins test. Those are followed up with an inspection and body assessment using the Henneke body scoring system by Espy and Animal Care Services.

These gentle giants are family to us. They greet us at pasture gates and gladly and willingly get in their trailers to come to work. They get tons of attention every day. When a 2,000-pound animal puts their head down to have their headstall put on or their mane braided, they’re making a clear choice. No 200-pound man can make a 2,000-pound animal do anything he or she doesn’t want to do.

One suggestion is a transition to pedicabs and electric carriages. They’re essentially proposing to replace a 1,600-2,000-pound horse pulling three to five people with a 150-pound person pedaling two-three people in a pedicab. The pedicab driver would be operating in the same conditions, same air and fumes as the horses. Working harder in the same traffic conditions as the carriages.
