. The first time the word “gay” is mentioned in the curricula is in the Grade 6 curriculum, in a “teaching tip” section. It states “Value statements: It’s wrong for people to be gay or lesbian. Factual statements: Some people are gay or lesbian.” The same occurs in the Grade 7 curriculum.

What kind of message are we sending about inclusion and representation to 2SLGBTQ+ kids by failing to acknowledge their existence until Grade 8?The P.E.I. Department of Education and Lifelong Learning claims to be striving for affirmation and inclusion, and yet, fails to actualize these aspirations within their health curricula.

This definition not only falsely labels transgender as “transgendered,” but also suggests thrice that this is how someone “feels” rather than this is how someone “is,” implying choice and removing legitimacy. In the entire P.E.I. health curricula, there is no mention of nonbinary or two-spirit individuals or students.

The directive published by the P.E.I. Department of Education and Lifelong Learning cannot be the end of advocacy for 2SLGBTQ+ students. To achieve advocacy, inclusion, and respect, P.E.I.’s health curricula must include intentional, comprehensive, accurate and accepting representation of 2SLGBTQ+ students.
