sponsored by U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, designating a half-acre school campus in Marfa as America’s newest national park site. This honors the modern Mexican American experience in the national park system and sheds light on the racial divide in the Southwestern United States from the late 1800s to the mid-1960s.
Many formerly segregated schools have since been demolished, with the stories of this past buried along with them. The Blackwell School is one of the last remaining ones, thanks to the advocacy and conservation efforts by Blackwell alumni and the National Parks Conservation Association. It will join a growing list of park sites dedicated to modern Latino history.
