COMMENTARY: Is the shrink into one health-care authority the best move for Newfoundland and Labrador?
It seems to me that “avoiding duplication” implies that the government is highlighting the current inefficiencies in how they are delivering health-care services. We know this is true, therefore it makes sense for the government to condense their workload because it cannot effectively manage the ongoing situation in our province. But it is the statement to “provide consistency” that raises red flags.
The legislation’s proposition of creating regional health councils is the main example where we can evaluate the ability of certain regions of the province to make their own decisions that are based on the needs of the region. The proposed councils would be “responsible for advising the provincial health authority in the particular needs of various areas of the province to deliver health care at a regional level," according to a government news release.
In 2021, Newfoundland and Labrador recorded 134 family physicians per 100,000 population, which is far below the Canadian average of 246 per 100,000 population. The shortage of family physicians is even more evident in rural communities across the province and this issue will now be tackled by the one authority based in St. John’s.
The second choice is to take their concerns to the central authority, which could be hundreds of kilometres away and littered with figurative speedbumps on the road.
