Almaráz would walk into the classroom and immediately begin writing on the blackboard to outline for the day’s lecture.
Félix D. Almaráz Jr. and I met regularly for lunch to catch up on each other’s readings, writing projects and scholarly pursuits and on social history .
A tenured professor of history, Almaráz retired from the University of Texas at San Antonio at the end of August 2011, after 50 years in education. After he left St. Mary’s University, he taught at Pan American University in Edinburg and spent one year at the University of Texas at Austin in 1970. He then moved to the South San Antonio Independent School District to take over the reins of the newly established bilingual education program.
When Jo Emma and I married in the summer of 1971 in Zapata, Almaráz and his wife were our padrinos de brindis . There is no doubt from my many experiences with Almaráz that he left deep footprints through a life of friendship, teaching and, most important, through a life of love for his family and friends. His brilliant mind and sense of humor will always be remembered.
In the mid-1990s, I invited Almaráz to bring his Chautauqua portrayal of Sen. Sam Houston to about 600 students and the social studies faculties from three middle schools. The students experienced an outstanding performance of Houston. Moreover, they learned a different perspective of Texas and American history events.
