across our neighborhoods that espouse ugly and vicious lies that leave our communities in shock and disbelief? How do we stop this when the offenders hide in the dark of night and their despicable messages are protected by the veil of freedom of speech?
My disconnect is that I am an optimist at heart. I believe that the good in our neighbors outweighs the evil and ignorance in the hearts of the few.Unfortunately, I believe that the hate has found its foothold because we have become so terribly siloed and isolated that we have forgotten how to care about others outside of our immediate family, neighborhood and friend circle.
The Jewish community would gratefully benefit from not having to fight this hatred alone. Our friends and neighbors want to help confront this evil. Thechallenges every visitor to ask themselves upon departing the museum, “Now that you know, what will you do?” The Jewish community is also reaching out to our neighbors to join us in demanding that these atrocious acts of bigotry and racism end. We cannot stand idly by and watch hate take root in our city, state or nation. It is up to all of us to confront antisemitism and all acts of bigotry.
Let us join together and return to the golden standard of loving one another like we love ourselves. We certainly have it in us. We can do it if we choose to not stay indifferent to hate in our midst.Nehemia “Nammie” Ichilov is president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio.
