Morgan remains one of the world's top players. Wave seek to develop forwards Jaedyn Shaw, Amirah Ali and others.

The San Diego Wave will face new challenges this year, starting March 25, when the season opens with a Saturday night contest at Snapdragon Stadium.

The goal was Morgan’s 16th in 18 official matches, a blistering pace at any level of advanced soccer. The World Cup and Olympic champion served as a cheat code, enabling the NWSL newbies to offset deficits in collective shared experience, an asset that often correlates to more sophisticated soccer. Stoney attributed the teams’ offensive disparity across the six months to Portland’s edge in shared experience. “They’re an established team, had been playing together for many years and it was our first season,” she said. “Hopefully, this year, we’ll build those relationships even more, get more people on the score sheet.”

At 17, Shaw became the youngest player to score in an NWSL debut. Despite not joining the team until June and an August hiatus at the under-20 World Cup, she averaged a goal every 50 minutes. She scored with each foot and her head.
