Months of solid work a season ago wiped out by glut of homers down the stretch
The look on the face of Padres reliever Emilio Pagan as he stood next to his locker at Peoria Sports Complex signaled that he knew the inbound questions without hearing a single word.
The ERA in mid-June, 2.77. The narrative-shredding finish? Pagan surrendered half of his 16 home runs in a matter of weeks, allowing 15 earned runs in that stretch after giving up just 19 in his other 55 appearances.
No reason to throw out the mental baby with the mental bath water, he reasoned. There’s no doubt, though, that the late home-run barrage erased months of solid work in the minds of most.“Though this might not sound true to some people, I could care less about my personal numbers,” Pagan said. “I wanted to help the team win games. The hardest part was, I was going out there and hurting the team. I can swallow my personal failures, no problem.Timing matters, obviously.
“The hardest part was, we were technically still in the hunt for the playoffs,” said Pagan, 30. “They were adjustments I knew I needed to make, but it’s hard to know, how long should I stick with this adjustment if the results aren’t coming?’
