Column: MacKenzie Scott gives $1.1 million to S.D. Junior Achievement [Breaking]
MacKenzie Scott, who helped build Amazon with her now ex-husband, Jeff Bezos, has been diligently continuing to give away a large portion of her fortune to worthy causes. Her generosity, once again, has touched the San Diego community.
The Junior Achievement donation, too, is part of a bigger $38.8 million gift from Scott to the national organization and 26 of its affiliates that was announced Aug. 16.“We’re certainly glad to receive it and were quite taken aback,” said Siddhartha Vivek, president and CEO of S.D. Junior Achievement.
Now he is holding special meetings with board members to discuss ways to ensure that the windfall is put to the best use possible. In March, Habitat for Humanity International and 84 of its U.S. affiliates were given a $436 million gift. She explained: “Our team’s focus over these last nine months has included some new areas, but as always, our aim has been to support the needs of underrepresented people from groups of all kinds. The cause of equity has no sides.”
Subsequent publicity and a plea on the nonprofit’s Facebook page brought in more than $70,000 in donations, Fry reports. Then Mercedes-Benz of Escondido entered the picture, giving her a great deal.
