Shoulder surgery paying off for Fernando Tatis Jr. Chicago has been good to the Padres.
Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 14 batted balls in Phoenix had an average exit velocity 2.4 miles per hour above his career norm. At 95.7 mph, the average exceeds Major League Baseball’s average by 7.2 mph.
In running 83 feet Friday night to snare a flyball, Tatis covered 29.3 feet per second. The clocking matched his averages in two other seasons. By comparison the 28.2 marks of Jake Cronenworth and Ha-Seong Kim are the fastest among Padres regulars.Their kind of town A.J. Preller and Peter Seidler get a winning grade for acquiring Darvish from the Cubs in December 2020.
Undeterred by San Diego’s “small market” status, Seidler was OK with the player payroll rising to MLB’s top five and to third this year. Darvish’s value extends betond the mound to his role as an unoffical Padres ambassador. Having re-upped in March for $108 million across six years, he no doubt represents the Padres well to Japanese stars such as Shohei Ohtani, a potential free agent who was a teammate for seven weeks during the recent World Baseball Classic. Preller and his scouts are active in Japan, where Darvish still draws national headlines.
