The son of Poway Mayor Steve Vaus makes his own splash with the dark, coming-of-age movie, 'Scuba,' which Jacob Vaus wrote and directed

When a young film producer from Poway appeared on the local “On the Air” show on KUSI TV, co-host Russ T Nailz jokingly said, “You should cast me in the movie.”

The name Vaus is familiar to many San Diegans. Jacob’s dad, Steve Vaus, is the mayor of Poway and narrowly missed a bid for a seat on the county Board of Supervisors in the 2020 elections. Growing up in a family of achievers made its mark on him early on. “I felt I needed to put myself out there and succeed,” he says. In fact, the theme of “Scuba,” revolves around two high school actor wannabes who, upon failing to excel in the school’s drama program, write and produce their own play.

When they filmed theatrical sequences, his former Poway High theater teacher, Sharon Wezelman, was on the set helping for the full eight days, 12 hours a day, during her summer vacation. Plus, she played a role in the film.
