Those who may be most affected by development decisions can be left out of the conversation if we don't change our approach

Currently the groups mostly consist of White homeowners, Garrick reports, meaning the perspectives of minorities, renters and younger residents are often missing. There certainly will be plenty to sort out with the proposal. I think some of the critics’ concerns are fair, namely that it may exacerbate the strain on what is a volunteer commission and put low-income areas and working people at a disadvantage given they face greater challenges committing time to such a group.
However, supply is a problem that’s become even more daunting for renters and young people, who find themselves house-hunting in a more competitive market while simultaneously encountering significant obstacles their parents and grandparents never faced. Heck, if one even manages to buy a home, the current generation is still disadvantaged compared to many older homeowners because they will be required to pay significantly more in property taxes because Proposition 13 more or less capped property taxes for older homeowners.
