Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson had been dealt a royal flush earlier Monday when he won the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft lottery, but he remained poker-faced when asked about drafting top prospect Connor Bedard, writes _phil_thompson.

TSN analyst Craig Button, a former Calgary Flames general manager, said: “When you get a player like Connor Bedard — no different than Mario Lemieux, no different than Sidney Crosby, no different than Connor McDavid — you might not be close to winning the Stanley Cup, but you know that you can be a Stanley Cup contender with that player in your lineup. That’s what the Blackhawks now have.”

“They need to get other young pieces in place and have a plan for a little bit older support players. … You have to have a plan.”“Lou Lamoriello said it best,” Button said, referring to the longtime GM for the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders. “He said, ‘You always have a five-year plan, but you better be able to change that plan in a minute.’”

“I don’t think it accelerates anything, just because we’ve never really said what it’s going to take,” he said. “It’ll take us as long as it takes to build a team.
