The four Colombian children who survived 40 days alone in theafter their plane went down were fleeing from a violent armed group that was recruiting children in their home region, according to family.

"I was very scared the children would be recruited," Ranoque told the paper by phone, adding that the armed groups in the country recruit children as young as 2. Manuel Ranoque is the father of two of the youngest indigenous children who survived an Amazon plane crash that killed three adults and then braved the jungle for 40 days before being found alive. He spoke to the media from the entrance of the military hospital where the children are receiving medical attention in Bogotá, Colombia.
