Solid pitching performances from Justin Lamkin, Chris Cortez and Evan Aschenbeck helped Texas A&M beat Florida at the College World Series.

Coach Jim Schlossnagle ’s decision to turn to Justin Lamkin for a postseason start paid off late Saturday night and on into Sunday morning, following a four-hour rain delay at the College World Series . The Aggies edged Florida 3-2 in the opening round of the CWS in Omaha , Neb. , thanks to solid outings from Lamkin , Chris Cortez and Evan Aschenbeck , and the incredible reach of 6-6 right fielder Jace LaViolette.

LaViolette also took away a potential two-run home run in the top of the ninth in reaching over the fence for the inning’s second out, as Florida’s Cade Kurland trotted back to the dugout in disbelief. The Aggies will face Kentucky at 6 p.m. Monday in the winners bracket of the CWS. The Wildcats defeated North Carolina State 5-4 earlier Saturday in 10 innings. The Gators will face North Carolina State at 1 p.m. Monday in an elimination game.
