| College football winners and losers: For Penn State, all’s well that ends well

Penn State started slow against Northwestern but ultimately got the result it needed Saturday.

A week after blasting Iowa, the Nittany Lions did not play great in the first half at Northwestern on Saturday before self-correcting and earning a 41-13 rout.Penn State isn’t the first team to struggle to dispatch an overmatched foe the week after operating at a near-flawless level, and it certainly won’t be the last. Moreover, given where Penn State sits this season — with its games against Ohio State and Michigan serving as the barometers — its other 10 games are basically pass/fail affairs.

And best of all for Davis and his teammates, Kentucky remained undefeated as it heads into next week’s trip to Georgia.The Utes did a fine job in the season’s first four weeks hiding that their offense was limited with quarterback Cameron Rising still recovering from last winter’s ACL surgery. Utah’s ceiling is still tied to whether and when Rising can return. An open date next weekend couldn’t be timed any better, but the Utes must contend with both Oregon and Southern California in October . There’s still a lot of potential for the defending Pac-12 champions, but they need to be at full strength to realize it.The Cardinals are 5-0 for the first time since joining the ACC in 2014 after Friday’s 13-10 victory at North Carolina State.
