The 2023 coaching carousel has taken longer to start spinning than last season, but there are two open Big Ten jobs and things should speed up soon. They always do.
By this point in the 2022 college football season, the coaching carousel needed new shocks and struts because it was spinning so fast.
The carousel will get moving soon -- it always does -- and there will be some surprises. As the season nears the halfway point, here's a look at the two current openings, the top candidates for this cycle, the coaches facing the most pressure and the assistants who have helped their profiles most in the early part of the season.
"I'm happy here, I'm not looking around," a coach likely to be on the radar for Big Ten and SEC openings told me."But the Big Ten and SEC have separated themselves, so you have to be open." The school likely will seek veteran head coaches who can stabilize the program. Tulane's Willie Fritz, Kansas' Lance Leipold, Wake Forest's Dave Clawson and Air Force's Troy Calhoun all would make sense. But interim coach David Braun has a real shot at the job, I'm told, after a 3-3 start. Northwestern's closing schedule is manageable, and bowl eligibility for Braun might be enough.
