San Diego State coach Mark Martinez said the Aztecs weren’t going to put last season — the worst in the school’s Division I and Mountain West history — out of their minds.SDSU began to put last season in the rear view mirror over the weekend at UNLV. In emphatic fashion, it should be added. The Aztecs won Friday’s opener 8-5, then put a 28-8 beating on the Rebels in Saturday’s second game to win the series.
SDSU’s run and hit totals on Saturday were the highest in 16 years, when the Aztecs scored 31 runs on 29 hits in a shutout victory over Air Force at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Ducks used four pitchers to limit USD to four hits in Saturday’s shutout, the first time this season the Toreros have been held scoreless. On Sunday, USD managed only three hits, but pushed across a second-inning run on a sacrifice fly.UC San DiegoUCSD dropped the first and third games of its home series with Santa Clara on 6-1 and 7-6 scores, managing a 7-4 win in the middle game.
