Following a college enrollment decrease in the spring, the U.S. Department of Education announced it will be making it easier for students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, to waive additional documentation needed for federal student aid
Tuesday it will be making it easier for students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, to waive additional documentation needed for federal student aid.... [+]College undergraduate enrollment fell 4.9 percent in the spring, according to data from the National Student Clearinghouse, and community colleges saw a 9.5 percent decrease in enrollment.
The changes to the aid process will take place for the 2021-2022 application cycle with the hopes of helping “approximately 200,000 more students from low-income backgrounds and students of color enroll in college,” the department noted in a press release. The department also noted the aid verification process may be challenging for applicants from low-income backgrounds, since those applying for a Federal Pell Grant must submit additional documentation to verify their income, such as transcripts for tax returns.
But at least 20 percent of eligible applicants are exempt from tax filing due to low income and are not able to provide the transcripts.3 million. That’s the number of Pell Grant recipients selected for verification each year. The U.S. Department of Education said that the number of applicants that make it through the verification process is smaller, but it did not provide those numbers.
