Who is entitled to Cold Weather Payments? How to check postcodes in my area and when you get paid

It is unseasonably cool at the moment, as a nasty cold and icy snap makes its way through the UK. Though December is certainly not known for being a warm month, we would not ordinarily expect snow, ice and temperatures below 0°C until the end of the month or January onwards.

Those who are eligible for a Cold Weather Payment from the Department for Work and Pensions will get £25 every time the weather in their area is - or is forecast to be - 0°C or below. The money will be paid if the temperatures remain 0°C or below for seven consecutive days, with the scheme running until March 31, 2023.

However, if you are not sure whether or not a Cold Weather Payment is due in your area and you think that you may be eligible, you can check on the Gov.uk website here. Simply select the region that you live and enter the first three characters of your postcode. The Government have said that, for those eligible, they will get £25 for each seven day period of very cold weather between November 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023.
