Consultant anaesthetist Dr Kate Gardner said the gas also had "unpleasant" side effects, such as increasing post-operative nausea.Nitrous oxide, which has been used in healthcare since the 1860s, is responsible for 2% of the NHS's carbon footprint and 75% of the anaesthetic gas footprint.
