Government money, money that might be used to buy an MRI machine, is raining down upon the AI frontier. Some of it will go to idiots
There is a pervasive problem with the news these days, and I am going to risk annoying colleagues by speaking of it frankly. It’s this phrase “artificial intelligence.” Ninety per cent of you just read that sentence and imagined either a) a cute robot or b) a sexy robot.
On the principle that the money would probably be wasted however it was used, and that techies are a social vanguard who morally deserve great lashings of money, this may be fine. The important point is that none of it has anything to do with computer “intelligence” or artificial thought as these words would normally be used. There’s no wise, laconic robot anywhere in any of it.
“You start with your observations. What have you seen in the past decades in terms of where wildfires have occurred and how big they got? And you look for correlations with any factor that might have any impact. The question is which data really does have any correlation. That’s where the AI comes in play. It automatically figures those correlations out.”
